Traditionally, people think of Apple's software as completely walled off. This certainly isn't the be all and end all for human-computer interfaces, but I'm thrilled that we're hurdling towards a future where communicating with your computer is as easy as talking to your friends. Now that you can search for "Keynote presentations I made in May" or "emails I received from Carol," finding your files will be much easier. You still trigger the search bar in the same way, but you can do local searches using the same kind of natural language that you'd use with Siri. With this update, Spotlight is much easier to use. That's why I'm excited that Apple is rethinking how search works on OS X. Even with the diligent use of naming conventions, finding a specific document in the Finder can sometimes be like finding a needle in a haystack. The more content we have, the more important search becomes. Nobody is forcing you to use fullscreen mode if it's not your cup of tea, but I'm glad that it's getting better for those of us who use it to get work done. Of course, you can still navigate around your desktop as you would normally. For example, being able to keep Soulver (Opens in a new window) open next to my text editor in split view is a really useful improvement. More often than not, you need multiple windows open when you're trying to accomplish a task. Dubbed "split view," this is a significant step forward for the distraction-free interface. Now when you're in fullscreen mode, you can have two apps displayed side-by-side. While the Mac has obviously had that kind of functionality for decades, Apple is making it even better with El Capitan. Over on the iPad, iOS 9 finally introduced side-by-side multitasking. Whether you're on the fence about the upgrade, or simply want to know a little bit more about Apple's latest OS, this truncated list is what you need to know. Okay, so what are we getting here?
